For years I believed that high performance meant being able to handle more pressure than everyone else.
More responsibility.
More hours.
More problem solving.
More resilience.
And to be fair, as humans we can handle pressure and stress. Our nervous system is designed to respond to challenge.
But what I didn’t understand at the time is that not everyone starts from the same baseline.
If you grew up in an environment where there was a lot of chaos, unpredictability, stress or constant change, your nervous system may already be operating in a state of hyper vigilance.
You’re already “on.”
Already scanning for problems.
Already anticipating what might go wrong.
Already feeling responsible for holding everything together.
Now place that nervous system into a high pressure workplace.
Deadlines.
Budgets.
People relying on you.
Constant change and uncertainty.
What happens is that you’re not just responding to pressure when it arises,
you’re operating from an accumulation of stress and anxiety that’s been there for years.
And over time that level of vigilance becomes exhausting.
This is one of the reasons so many high performers eventually experience burnout. Not because they are weak, but because their nervous system has been running in overdrive for years.
I saw this clearly in my own life.
After 17 years working in television production, pushing hard, carrying huge responsibility and always being “on,” my body eventually said enough in 2023.
What I’ve learned since then is that sustainable high performance doesn’t come from pushing harder.
It comes from changing the internal operating system. Essentially creating space in your mind and healing the part of you that thought the only way to live was by surviving and being on high alert.
When we begin doing the inner work to understand our patterns, regulate our nervous system and integrate past experiences, something powerful happens.
We stop reacting automatically to pressure.
We begin to respond with clarity.
From that place, work still gets done.
Decisions still get made.
Leadership still happens.
But it happens from a much calmer state.
And that is where true high performance lives.
Not in constant pressure.
But in calm, clear and regulated leadership.
