This is an interesting question because when people feel unsafe at work, there are usually two possible things happening.
The first is external.
You might genuinely be in a workplace where the culture is built on fear rather than support.
Control rather than collaboration.
Power rather than trust.
In environments like this, people often feel like they are walking on eggshells. Speaking up feels risky. Mistakes feel dangerous. The nervous system is constantly on alert.
But there is also a second possibility that many people don’t talk about.
Sometimes the workplace itself isn’t the problem.
Sometimes the feeling of unsafety has been with us for a long time, and the workplace simply activates it.
If we grew up in environments where we felt unheard, unseen or constantly needing to anticipate other people’s reactions, our nervous system can become highly vigilant.
So when we enter professional environments, we may find ourselves scanning for problems, worrying about getting things wrong, or assuming we’re about to be criticised.
Meanwhile, we look around and see colleagues who appear calm, confident and thriving.
And we wonder what they’re doing differently.
One of the most powerful things I’ve learned over the years is this.
What is happening in our outer world often reflects what is happening in our inner world.
When we begin to look inward and do the work to heal the parts of us that once felt unsafe, unseen or unheard, something incredible starts to shift.
We stop reacting to old patterns.
We begin responding with clarity and confidence.
And as our inner world becomes safer and more regulated, our outer world begins to change too.
New opportunities appear.
Confidence grows.
Our voice becomes stronger.
Work starts to feel energising rather than exhausting.
I know this because I’ve lived both sides of it.
There was a time when my mind was constantly running worst-case scenarios, and I felt responsible for everything around me.
Today, I’ve created a career where I genuinely thrive and where I get to help others do the same.
And what I’ve discovered is that this work isn’t scary.
In fact, it’s incredibly freeing.
There is truly nothing to fear and everything to gain.
If this resonates with you and you’re curious about how to start shifting these patterns, feel free to send me a private message.
