You Don’t Need to Become Someone New, Just Stop Being Who You’re Not

19/10/2026

We’ve been sold a story that growth means more. More courses, more habits, more discipline, more versions of ourselves to chase. A better, shinier, more “together” person, always just out of reach.

But what if the person you’re trying to become is already here? What if growth isn’t about adding anything at all, and the real work is gently removing everything that was never you?

This subtle shift changes everything. Because you don’t have to build a new you to start living your vision. You just have to clear the old, outdated way of being you.

What Michelangelo Knew About Becoming Who You Really Are

A famous story about Michelangelo and his statue of David goes like this. When asked how he created such a masterpiece, he is said to have replied that David was already inside the block of marble; he simply chipped away everything that wasn’t David.

Historians can’t confirm he ever said those exact words. But the statue’s true story is even more powerful.

Other sculptors had already started and abandoned the block of marble Michelangelo used. It sat neglected for decades, considered flawed and too difficult to work with. Then, in 1501, a 26-year-old Michelangelo took it on. Over the next three years, he revealed one of the most celebrated figures in human history.

The marble didn’t need to become something else. It needed someone who could see what was already inside it, and the patience to remove what was in the way.

You are that block of marble. And you are also the sculptor.

“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” attributed to Michelangelo

Growth as Removal, Not Addition

This idea isn’t new. Wisdom traditions have pointed to it for thousands of years.

“To attain knowledge, add things every day. To attain wisdom, remove things every day.” — Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

The poet Rumi put it even more beautifully:

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” Rumi

And Bruce Lee, in his own direct way, called it hacking away at the unessential.

Notice the pattern. None of them says become more. They all say: clear what’s blocking you. Your confidence, your calm, your creativity, your capacity for abundance- these aren’t things you need to acquire. They’re your natural state, buried under layers of stuff you picked up along the way.

Why Your Vision Can Feel Too Big

Most of us carry a vision. Maybe it’s the business you know you’re meant to build. The book you keep thinking about. The life by the ocean, the freedom to travel, the relationship where you feel truly seen.

And so often, alongside that vision, comes a negative or critical voice: Who do you think you are? That’s not for people like you. It’s too much, too big, too late.

Your vision isn’t too big. It only feels too big because something old is standing in the way.

That something is usually a limiting belief or an outdated subconscious program- something you learned about yourself in childhood, but it’s not true about you; it’s a pattern of thinking you absorbed long before you could question it.

Maybe you learned that money is hard to come by. That it’s safer to stay small. That being visible means being judged. That you have to earn rest, or love, or success.

These beliefs often formed in childhood, or in moments of hurt, as a way to keep you safe. They did their job once. But they were never you. They’re the excess marble, and they’re blocking the masterpiece.

The Layers That Were Never Really You

So what are we actually chipping away? Here are some of the most common layers I see in my clients:

• Inherited beliefs, ideas about money, success, worth or love passed down from family, school or culture.
• Survival patterns, people-pleasing, perfectionism, overworking or playing small, all learned to feel safe or accepted.
• Other people’s expectations, the version of you that you built to fit in, to be liked, or to make someone else comfortable.
• Old identities, who you were in a past job, relationship or season of life that you’ve outgrown but still carry.
• Fear-based thinking, the constant “what if it goes wrong?” loop that keeps your nervous system on high alert.

None of these is flaws. They’re simply layers. And layers can be removed.

How to Start Living Your Vision by Removing What’s in the Way

You don’t need a complete life overhaul. Like Michelangelo, you work one careful chip at a time.
1. Get clear on your vision. Close your eyes and picture the life you truly want. How do you feel there? Who are you being? Write it down in the present tense.
2. Notice the resistance. As you hold that vision, listen for the voice that says “yes, but…”. Those objections are gold; they show you exactly where limiting beliefs hide.
3. Ask: Is this belief actually mine? Trace it back. Whose voice is it? When did you first learn it? Most of the time, you’ll realise you didn’t choose it; someone handed it to you.
4. Thank it, then let it go. That old program was trying to protect you. Acknowledge it with compassion, then consciously decide you no longer need it.
5. Reprogram at the subconscious level. Because these patterns live below conscious awareness, talking about them is often not enough. Tools like hypnotherapy, meditation and breathwork help you work directly with the subconscious mind, where lasting change happens.
6. Act as the person who’s already there. Take one small action today that the real you, free of that old belief, would take. Each action chips away at another piece of marble.

You Were Never Broken, Just Covered Up

This is the part I most want you to hear. You are not a project to be fixed. You are not behind. You don’t lack some secret ingredient that everyone else seems to have.

Everything you need to live your vision is already within you. Your work isn’t to become someone new. It’s to stop being who you’re not.

And every time you let go of a belief that was never yours, a little more of the real you comes into the light.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “stop being who you’re not” mean? It means letting go of beliefs, habits, and identities you’ve taken on from others or past experiences, so your authentic self can show up naturally. It’s growth through release rather than effort.

What is a limiting belief? A limiting belief is a thought you accept as true that holds you back, for example, “I’m not good with money” or “People like me don’t succeed at that.” Most are formed early in life and operate subconsciously.

How do you remove subconscious blocks?

Start by becoming aware of them, then work with your subconscious mind directly through practices like hypnotherapy, guided meditation, and repeating new beliefs. Consistent small actions that contradict the old belief also help rewire it.
Can hypnotherapy help with limiting beliefs? Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious, where many limiting beliefs are stored, which is why many people find it an effective way to release old patterns and reinforce new ones.

Hi, I'm Emma Ritchie

For years, I struggled with low self-worth, self-doubt, and a deep disconnection from who I truly was. I wore the mask, played the roles, and did what I thought I should do—but inside, I felt lost. It wasn’t until I turned inward and began healing the relationship I had with myself that everything changed.

Real transformation starts when you work at the level of your energy, emotions, and mind—because only then can your behaviours shift and your outer world reflect your inner truth.

Today, my greatest passion is helping others do the same. I support people to integrate all parts of themselves—the light, the shadow, the wounds, the wisdom—and to dissolve the layers of judgement, shame, and not-enoughness that keep them small.

When you shift how you relate to yourself, everything begins to align.
You step into confidence, clarity, and calm—inside and out.
You stop waiting for permission and start creating the life you were born to live.
You call back your power.
You remember who you truly are.
